We caught up with Peter Andrews—and his wife Shirley—to talk about their vibrant garden, five decades of memories, and their top tips for local gardeners. Although Peter submitted the official entry, their incredible garden is truly a joint effort!

How long have you been gardening here, and how has it changed over the years?

"We’ve lived in our Hawkhurst house for 50 years! When we first bought it, the garden was mainly laid to lawn with a few modest, simple beds, but we could already see the potential to create a wonderful garden space. Over the decades, we’ve transformed it into our absolute happy place, adding a pond, vegetable patches, and even keeping chickens. While most of the variety and structure is in the back, the front garden is just as well-loved and carefully tended."

What do you love most about your garden?

"It’s not symmetrical or rigidly designed, and we prefer a relaxed, natural flow rather than anything overly uniform. We love to experiment with new things as we go. Above all, it gives us a wonderful sense of peace, solitude, and quiet mindfulness."

Is there one plant you couldn’t imagine your garden without?

"It’s hard to pick just one! We love all varieties of Begonias, as well as Busy Lizzies, Fuchsias, and Geraniums."

What’s your secret to keeping your garden looking so good?

"Consistent deadheading wherever needed, and keeping everything well-watered—though keeping up with the watering has certainly been a challenge given our increasingly hot and dry summers!"

What’s your best tip for hot, dry weather?

"Conserve water as much as you can, and definitely install water butts. Most importantly, don’t stress about the lawn turning brown—the lawn will bounce back in time, but the rest of the garden won't! Focus your attention and water on your beds, borders, hanging baskets, and planters."

What’s the best piece of gardening advice you’ve ever been given?

"Two things: First, let gardening be your hobby rather than a chore. Second, marry someone who loves gardening too! Gardening together brings Shirley and me so much joy, relaxation, and shared happiness."

Until next year - carry on gardening and we will be back in Summer 2027 with another great competition!!
