April 2026: Springing into Life in Hawkhurst

Welcome to the new monthly update from Hawkhurst in Bloom!
There is a specific kind of magic that settles over Hawkhurst as we move into the heart of spring.
Whether you’re walking past the historic colonnade or heading down to The Moor, you can feel the village truly waking up. At Hawkhurst in Bloom, we believe spring isn’t just a season—it’s an invitation to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into the soil.
April is the month where the hard work happens so the summer can shine.
What to Plant Right Now
Hardy Annuals: Scatter seeds like Poppies, Cornflowers, and Calendula directly into gaps in your borders. The warmer Weald soil will help them germinate quickly now.
Under Cover: Start sowing French Beans, Runner Beans, and Courgettes in pots indoors or in a greenhouse. They’ll be ready to plant out once the May frosts have passed.
Dahlia Care: If you have tubers tucked away, now is the time to pot them up in damp compost and keep them in a light, frost-free place to "wake them up" before they go into the garden in May.
Pro Tips for April Success
The "Pinch" Trick: Pinch out the very top growing tips of fuchsias or sweet peas to force them to grow bushy rather than spindly.
Deadhead the Past: While many of our daffodils and tulips still have plenty of time to brighten the village, keep an eye on those that finish early. Snip off faded heads but leave the green leaves alone to "recharge."
Support Your Tall Friends: Stake Delphiniums and Peonies now while they are small.
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch: Apply a thick layer of compost around shrubs and roses to keep moisture in and weeds out.
